History of the Delaware County Bar Association
The Delaware County Bar Association, originally the Delaware County Law Library Association, began in 1872 and continues to serve its members and the community with distinction. Initially, Delaware County was part of a larger judicial district which included Chester, Montgomery and Bucks Counties. It was not until 1879, seven years after the Bar Association formed, that Delaware County became its own, separate judicial district. Most cases in these early days involved mechanics liens, mortgage foreclosures and debt recovery, while negligence cases for personal injury were rare.. The types of cases in the Delaware County court system may have changed, but the Delaware County Bar Association continues to strive to serve the local community with legal assistance and referrals.
From 1872 until 1966, the Bar Association operated from offices in the Courthouse. In 1966, the Association dedicated its current building located at Front and Lemon Streets in Media. The building underwent major renovations in 2005 and was resdesigned to better serve its members. In 2011, because of a generous grant from the George B. Lindsay Memorial Foundation, a Lawyer’s Lounge was opened on the lower level of the Building to provide attorneys with space and facilities to use between appointments or while on breaks from Court.
Always at the forefront, the Delaware County Bar Association was the first in the five county area to publicize itself on the web in 1996. That tradition continues, as the Association updated its website in 2011 to make it more accessible to both members and the general public.
Members of the DCBA enjoy great educational and social opportunities, such as discounted CLE classes and special events. As an added bonus of membership, the Association introduced its Affinity Partners Program in 2011 to provide members with discounts and specialized services in a number of areas including banking, energy, telecommunications, and insurance. The members of the DCBA also sponsor charitable events which benefit organizations serving the community at large.
The Delaware County Bar Association , through its Board, administrators and staff, is dedicated to supporting its members and looks forward to continuing as the destination for legal resources for the Delaware County community.
